The Australian Capital Territory ACT Occupations List includes all the occupations that are currently in demand in Canberra (for migration purposes). Candidates who wish to live and work in Canberra under Australian immigration can nominate any of the occupations listed on the ACT occupation list .
The ACT occupation List 2020 is used to determine the eligibility for the following programs:
- Skilled Visas: ACT nomination of a Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) visa.
- Employer Nomination: Regional Certifying Body support of an Employer Nomination under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme.
a) For skilled visa applicants:
The ACT Occupation List 2018 checks if the occupation is applicable for ACT nomination of a Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) Visa. To determine your eligibility for ACT nomination you must read the ‘Guidelines for applying for ACT nomination’ and make sure that you meet the nomination criteria.
- Opened Occupations: If your occupation is open on the current ACT occupation list 2018 and you qualify the nomination criteria, you are eligible to apply for ACT nomination of a Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Visa
- Closed Occupations:
- Canberra residents: If you are living in Canberra and working in skilled occupation, and if you meet the nomination criteria than, you can apply for ACT nomination of a closed occupation listed on the ACT occupation list 2018.
- Overseas residents: If you have close ties in Canberra (family member or job opportunities);OR you have completed a PhD at an ACT university, and you meet the nomination criteria, you may be eligible to apply for ACT nomination.
Employability
The ACT Occupation List 2018 does not guarantee job in a nominated occupation. It only suggests that there are sufficient job opportunities in your nominated occupation before you apply for ACT nomination. You have to compete with other candidates for job opportunities in the labour market as part of a normal selection process. Your chances of succeeding will depend on employer requirements, your relevant skills, your work experience, and your level of English language ability.
New residents generally do not meet the criteria of employers who require citizenship or security clearance.
b) For Employer Sponsored Nomination applicants
Employers who are interested to nominate skilled workers under the Direct Entry Pathway Stream of the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) must look for the Regional Certifying Body (RCB) support prior to RSMS nomination acquire by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
Applying for Regional Certifying Body (RCB) support
As part of the application for RCB support, employers need to show that Local Labour Market is not able to fill the position.
Opened Occupations:If the nominated occupation is currently open on the ACT Occupation List 2018, the application for RCB support is allowed to meet this criterion.
Closed occupations:If the nominated occupation has a status of ‘closed’, or is not listed on the ACT Occupation List, the application for RCB support does not meet this criterion.
You should refer to the RCB guidelines for other pathways to determine that the position cannot be filled from the local labour market.
